Trekking to Everest Base Camp is the bucket-list dream for many… from its breathtaking views of towering mountain peaks of Thamserku, Kusum Kanguru and not to mention the awe-inspiring Everest at 8848m from Kalapatthar (5545m) at sunrise! Visit the memorials to the trekking greats and feel their spirit as you prepare for the epic climb to reach base camp (5357m) and leave your ‘khata’ (Tibetan Buddhist scarf) flapping in the wind to ask for protective energy and prayer. This trek is more than just a milestone to check off…it offers you a window into the traditional lives of the Khumbhu Sherpas. You will enrich your awareness of the rich cultural and religious heritage by visiting the famous Tengboche and Pangboche Monasteries. You will fall in love with the stunning glaciers and dynamic scenery of the amazing Khumbhu region, including the powerful Dudh Khosi (lit. “Milk River”) valley. In Spring (March – May), you will mesmorised by the immense beauty of rhododendron forests and wildflowers which provide a kaleidoscope of colours. In Autumn (September – November) you will be overcome by clear blue skies and excellent weather. For additional challenge and an even wider array of spectacular wilderness and high passes, check out the Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes trek.
These treks typically require you to do 6-7 hours each day over steep hilly terrain on usually rough trails but with no real extremes of weather. Treks in this category can include trekking to elevations of up to 5500m with daily ascends of around 400-700m.When trekking at higher altitudes, your body needs to adjust to lower levels of oxygen and this provides added physical challenge to the trek. It is important to be physically fit and to prepare your body by doing regular exercise prior to embarking on your trek. Previous hiking or camping experience is preferable.
