This trek offers you the bucket-list dream of achieving Everest Base Camp with the added challenge of conquering Cho-La Pass (5420m) and witnessing for yourself the intense beauty and magic of the string of turquoise gems known as Gokyo Lakes. In 18 days you will be blown away by the kaleidoscope of contrasting colours present amongst the incredibly wide variety of flora and fauna. In the Namche valley, keep your eyes on the lookout for the colourful danphe (Impeyan pheasant), Nepal’s national bird, as well as the elusive musk deer and Himalayan thar. Taking the main trail at Shanasa, you will have fantastic views of flanking snow-capped mountains of Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516m), Nuptse (7861m), Makalu (8481m), Cho Oyu (8153m) and Gychung Kang (7922m) while hearing the forceful rush of foaming water in the glacial fed Dudh Khosi (Lit. “Milk River”) as you pass Phortse Village on your way to the high alpine pastures of Machhermo. As you approach the stunning,emerald lakes of the world’s highest freshwater lake system prepare to be amazed by the sheer scale and the way they contrast so intensely with backdrop of greys, whites and blacks present in the surrounding mountains and rocky landscape. Take in sensational mountain views from the summit of Gokyo Ri (5357m) before heading over the Cho-La pass and continuing your epic journey to Everest Base Camp and back to Lukla for your mountain flight to Kathmandu. These treks typically require you to do 6-7 hours each day over steep hilly terrain on usually rough trails but with no real extremes of weather. Treks in this category can include trekking to elevations of up to 5500m with daily ascends of around 400-700m.When trekking at higher altitudes, your body needs to adjust to lower levels of oxygen and this provides added physical challenge to the trek. It is important to be physically fit and to prepare your body by doing regular exercise prior to embarking on your trek. Previous hiking or camping experience is preferable.
