Follow in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa who made the journey from Jiri on their epic summit of Mt Everest in 1953. Feel the built up of anticipation as you make your way through dense alpine forest of the Solukhumbhu region (lit. lower hills) passing green terraced valleys, rhododendron forests, authentic Sherpa village of Junbesi and Rai villages, crossing glacial rivers by suspension bridges on your way up into the Khumbu valley. Use the panorama of snow capped mountains surrounding you to imagine your first view of Everest (8848m), “Mother Goddess of Earth”, as the towering giant comes into view as you approach Namche Bazar and later when you come up close from the summit of Kalapatthar (5545m). Soak up the rich history of Tibetan Buddhist culture on offer at the famous Tengboche and Pangboche monasteries. This trek will leave you feeling spiritually enriched as well as inspired by the massive feat of Hillary’s expedition team.
These treks typically require you to do 6-7 hours each day over steep hilly terrain on usually rough trails but with no real extremes of weather. Treks in this category can include trekking to elevations of up to 5500m with daily ascends of around 400-700m.When trekking at higher altitudes, your body needs to adjust to lower levels of oxygen and this provides added physical challenge to the trek. It is important to be physically fit and to prepare your body by doing regular exercise prior to embarking on your trek. Previous hiking or camping experience is preferable.
