Rolwaling region made famous for its mysterious tales of yetis, truly is a hidden valley with a whole lot of charm and beautiful scenery. This trek offers a superb combination of high alpine and rhododendron forests, lush green terraced rice paddy fields, glacial moraines and traditional, unspoilt Sherpa villages for you to appreciate local culture, customs and lifestyle. With private views of Gauri Shankar, straddling the Tibetan border, Melungtse and Tashi Peaks, you will be spoilt for peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the more popular Everest Base Camp route. This camping trek will revitalise your spirit while conquering Yalung Ri Peak (5630m) and Tashi Lapcha La (5755m) will add physical challenge to this little known gem. The fun begins when we head from our starting point of Suri Dobhan with views of Gauri Shankar along the Tamakoshi River via Jagat to Simigaon passing dense mixed forest and rhododendron glades. From there we skirt the base of Rolwaling, Gauri Shankar and Landung Himal ranges which feed several alpine streams running into Rolwaling Khola as we make our way via the Sherpa village of Beding to Nagaon. Our challenge begins as we zigzag our way along Yalung glacier up to Yalung Ri base camp (4800m) and prepare to summit (5630m). The views of Melungtse (7181m) and Gauri Shankar (7145m) are simply out of this world and fully worth the effort of making the climb. Our next stop is Tsho Rolpa Lake (4540m), which at 3.45 kilometres in diameter, is one of the world’s biggest glacial lakes. Fed by glacier melt of Rolwaling Glacier, this lake has been increasing in size each year and threatens to take over the nearby valley region inhabited by some 6000 villagers. After circling the lake we up the ante again by tackling the rugged, steep slope combined with thick forest approaching and descending Tashi Lapcha La.From here we make our way down to Thame village and onto Namche Bazaar on our way to Lukla for our mountain flight back to Kathmandu… Leave the heavily trodden paths of Khumbhu behind, harness your sense of adventure and combine this with a whole lot of stamina to complete this truly epic expedition.
